Art Made 2 Suit

carolynn-sokilAllow me to introduce myself….my name is Carolynn Sokil and I am YOUR artist!

While I create art which pleases me, my specialty is creating art which suits you!

My journey started just a few short years ago when my husband and I hired a consultant to Feng Shui our home and office. There was a particular piece she explained we needed for a specific spot. The size could not be more than 3’x 1′ and had to be of 1 or more black horses running to the left! Imagine my surprise when after 3 months of looking I found nothing to suit.

I’ve consulted with many who have run into similar situations:

They like the shape of the design and size but the colours are not quite right. They have the right piece but it’s either too small or too large for the wall they have it imagined on. And the most challenging are those who have no idea what they are looking for and no idea where to start.

This is where YOUR Artist comes in!

After being unable to find what I was looking for…I decided I would try my hand at creating what our consultant had described. I found out I had talent. I had been drawing since I was 5 – always black and white (charcoal or ink) but up until then I had not seen in colour. Now my world is filled with colour!

Here are a few questions to start you off:

  • Do you have a particular wall, space, room in mind? If so, does it have a particular colour scheme already or are you wanting something which will go with any change in furniture or wall colour?  Maybe you wish to find a piece of art and then you will work the rest of your decor around something which becomes the centre piece of your room?  Are you looking for something whimsical to light up a particular space?
  • Is there a artistic style you have in mind? Do you like abstract art, maybe something which does not look like anything in particular or do you prefer realistic with or without a twist? Are you looking for something which reminds you of a place or something to inspire your dreams?
  • What type of art makes you stop and enjoy?  What makes your heart sing or smile (loudly)?

Below is a sampling of my artwork with a portion of storyline (click on the photo to enlarge):

Jamaican Sunset – 36″ x 24″

The original photo was captured at Sunset in Jamaica.  The couple met at the resort where the husband worked and later went back to get married. Every year they travel back with friends to celebrate their love of Jamaica and to visit his relatives.

When they opened their gift, they both exclaimed they recognized the sunset and the spot where the sail boats were pulled ashore.  The husband said he even recognized the tree.

Once hung in their 2 storey foyer, a friend visiting immediately recognized the view from her room when she stays at the resort. Captured moment!

– printed on various mediums

A mantra gleaned from The Master Key by Charles Haanel – I am Whole, Perfect, Strong, Powerful, Loving, Harmonious & Happy. What better way to represent this but in lotus pose.

This came to me during a meditation sit – I could see what needed to be created. People in Canada & the US are now wearing this on their T-Shirts!

Tofino Solitude
– 4″ x 5″

This recipient of this piece currently lives in Calgary and used the original photo as her screen saver.

This piece was given to  remind her of her dream of returning to Tofino, BC, Canada. The colours offering her solitude of mind.

My Red Revealed
– 48″ x 36″

A customer desired an abstract piece to work for her living room. The decor in the home was mostly white, black leather, chrome edged furniture with red accented colour strewn throughout. This piece, inspired by the feathers of a black swan, allowed her to highlight all which existed in her space. The piece was created to hang whichever way the owner chose – signed only after hung (rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise). my-red-revealed2

Boteccelli Angel – 16″ x 20″

This 4 year old little girl was seldom quite or still.  The photo used to paint from captured her Boteccelli like face and her attentive look.

Her mother was in tears when in receipt of the commission. She exclaimed it captured her likeness!

Nnothing-but-tongueothing But Tongue – 16″ x 20″

This guy was just so much fun to create.

Supposedly a giraffe’s tongue averages between 18-20″ in length.

The recipient has a significant love for giraffes. He was tickled to receive the gift to add to his rather large giraffe collection.

the-ball-went-whereThe Ball Went Where? – 8″ x 12″

To commemorate a friend’s daughter’s birthday, this whimsical piece was created.

I love creating the folds and movement of clothing using paint.

This was so much fun to do!

pondering-at-the-beachPondering – 16″ x 20″

The photo given to work from was in colour and both the hat and left portion of her hair were not included.

The sepia style choice of colour technique allow her features and the textures in her hair and cap to shine through.

A Moment In Time – 16’x20′

Commissioned by a young man for his girlfriend. He provided a black and white photo of her grandfather and a grandfather clock which had been lost while immigrating. While the clock on the table and the calendar were in the original photo, the rest was remove to allow for a timeless grouping.

Jack’s White Christmas
– 20″ x 24″

A wife commissioned this for her husband’s Christmas present. They had lost their beloved Jack in July.

She provided the original photo as well as a variety of others which showed the details of his eyes. They hung the piece above the fireplace. Later she explained Jack’s eyes follow her whenever she is in the room.

Bamboo Room Love

The Owner at The Bamboo Room at Alma in Ojochal, Costa Rica took a photo of a red eyed tree frog sitting on a table in their restaurant. They did not realize until they took a close look at the photo that the female (about 2″ in size) had a male (which is usually about 1/2 the size) giving her some bamboo love. Could not resist painting this for the owners.

The Dragon Room – 10′ x 9′ room

Created this full room mural with love for our son’s 7th Christmas present. A young boy who was enthralled with everything “How To Train A Dragon“.  A new bunk bed with the wood wall theme below for hideouts with his friends. A 10′ Toothless dragon’s face positioned where he lay his head (at his request) with the body wrapped around the wall and onto the ceiling. The hero of the movie, Hiccup, stood 5′ tall beside his bed with our son’s facial features in place of the original. Regular acrylic wall paint was used to create the effect for easy removal. how-to-train-a-dragon

Colours of Nature

These 2 pieces were specific to a particular love of the garden. Both were noted as being cheerful to look at on the wall.

As an individual I totally embrace that everyone has their own taste in art.  As an artist I recognize that my style is not a fit for everyone.  The wonderful thing is that for each person’s taste there is an artist out there whose work will resonate.

WATCH THIS SPACE – I am currently working on rock art as well as art which does not require any framing – allowing the presentation of the art to be part of the art.  Updated photos will arrive shortly.

Sunset at The Bamboo Room, Ojochal, Costa Rica ROCKS! – 7.5″ x 3.5″

Painted using acrylic on locally grown rocks, this sunset captures a lovely moment from The Bamboo Room at Alma de Ojochal Hotel

Base covered in felt for ease of presentation.

tree-frog-rockBursting Red Eyed Tree Frog – 3″ x 3″

Allowing the shape and markings of each rock to determine the painting, this rock’s silvery burst of colour framed the red eyed tree frog bursting out.

Fun and functional paperweight or souvenir of Costa Rica. No rocks were harmed in the creation of this art work.

Value is dependent upon size, style and detail of art work requested.
